From the Chair
The University of Mississippi Department of Dermatology celebrated its 10th anniversary as a department with a wonderful reunion at the American Academy of Dermatology annual meeting in New Orleans. It was such a great time visiting with so many current and former students, residents, and faculty involved in the success of UMMC Dermatology over the past ten years. We continue to honor our founding chairman, Dr. Brodell, for the strong foundation he built and for positioning the department for future success. There are many achievements to be proud of over the past ten years. Our residency program has continued to grow and we will have thirteen residents (PGY2-4), our largest number ever, beginning in July 2023. By this June, we will have graduated 25 residents and 7 fellows, with a 100% board passage rate to date. We have published two textbooks along with numerous chapters and journal articles over the past ten years. And most importantly, we have expanded access to quality dermatologic care to thousands of Mississippians.
I am proud to continue this legacy as the chair of UMMC Dermatology and our future looks bright! We continue to be leaders in developing and providing rural dermatology through our clinics in Louisville and Rolling Fork. Our clinical trial unit lead by Dr. Thy Huynh recently enrolled our first clinical trials patient at UMMC Dermatology and we will have our first clinic research fellow join us in July 2023. Our residency training and Mohs and Dermatopathology fellowships are strong and all three recently received continuing accreditation from the ACGME. Our clinic visits, Mohs procedures, and dermatopathology cases are at an all-time high. None of this is possible without the investment of time and resources of so many people, both within UMMC and our partners and colleagues throughout the state. I thank you for your support and look forward to the next ten years of UMMC Dermatology!
