Where Are They Now?
Kevin Sijansky, M.D.
2013 Residency Class
Tell us about what you have been doing since you graduated from the residency program. What does your anesthesia practice look like? How did UMMC prepare you for your current career?
I jumped right in and started working at a busy private practice group in Jackson, MS. I was actually on call July 4th, right after finishing residency.
Our practice is a dynamic one. It’s changed quite a bit over the 10 years I’ve been here. We cover multiple hospitals, ASCs, and every day is different. I like the fact we move around different facilities in the Jackson metroplex. I’ve got some really great partners I’ve learned a lot from too.
UMMC prepared me to do anything, from acutely critically ill patients to healthy infants. The hands on experience and the training I received was second to none. I credit my training program for preparing me to step in day 1 of a busy private practice and not just survive but also thrive.
What did you enjoy most about being a resident in this program?
I enjoyed the autonomy, the acuity of patients we cared for, and the attending anesthesiologists who taught me, as well as the camaraderie amongst fellow anesthesia residents.
If you could give any advice to our current trainees, what would it be?
Take advantage of every opportunity to learn and refine your skills and knowledge as an anesthesia provider as well as a physician leader. Go the extra mile while you’ve got support, backup, and an extensive knowledge base the attending anesthesiologists can provide.

2014 Residency Class and 2015 Pain Management Fellowship Class
Tell us about what you have been doing since you graduated from the residency program. What does your anesthesia practice look like? How did UMMC prepare you for your current career?
Since graduation in 2015 from my pain fellowship, I started a pain practice in Vicksburg which is my hometown. Initially I was with Merit Health and after 4 years including serving as chief of surgical services, I transitioned as planned to private practice. I along with a few other UMMC graduates (Joe Cook, Thomas Buford, and Tyler Burns), own and practice at Total Pain Care, a Mississippi based private pain management company established in 2019 in the Jackson area. We also have clinics in Vicksburg as well as Meridian.
What did you enjoy most about being a resident in this program?
UMMC gave me the clinical and procedural skills needed to be successful. I enjoyed the camaraderie of the program as well as the inner network of all programs.
If you could give any advice to our current trainees, what would it be?
My advice would be to soak up any business experience that you can and connect with not only colleagues in anesthesia but also the surgical and medical residencies.
