Off-Site Anesthesia

The primary mission of the Division of Off-Site Anesthesia Services at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is to develop excellence in highly focused areas of basic science linked with translational clinical science and outcomes research relevant to our specialty while encouraging and supporting innovations in patient care.

The division is dedicated to providing a wide range of comprehensive clinical care for patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures outside of the operating room. These procedures often require challenging resourcefulness and skill from the anesthesia team because of special considerations unique to the procedures, limited space and access to the patients. The nurse anesthetists and the anesthesia technologists provide invaluable assistance in developing standards and practices for the safe management of these patients.

The division provides a wide variety of surgical and diagnostic procedures at various locations including computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging suites, pediatric and adult cardiac catheterization lab, special procedures unit (neurovascular), and adult gastroenterology suite. We work very closely with the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior providing services during ECT procedures to large number of patients. Some services are provided at the Jackson Medical Mall.

During their four-year training, anesthesia residents routinely rotate through the off-site division. This rotation helps them develop clinical skills relevant to their future practice. They learn how to make decisions regarding use of a specific anesthetic technique in a given patient taking into consideration remote location from the operating room and resources.
