Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia

The Division of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia at the University of Mississippi Medical Center's Department of Anesthesiology manages anesthesia for a large spectrum of adult cardiac, vascular and thoracic procedures.

The members of the cardiothoracic team are dedicated to providing the highest quality patient care and a supportive environment for educating both medical students and residents. Our core faculty members have expertise in management of patients ranging from routine CABG surgeries, off-pump CABG surgeries, re-operations, and single- or multi-valve operations to management of patients with an intra-aortic balloon pump or with end-stage heart disease presenting for heart transplantations.

We also offer services to patients requiring ventricular assist device placements. The use of intra-operative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is an integral part of our clinical practice. In addition, the division anesthetizes patients undergoing thoracic surgeries for mediastinoscopy, wedge resection, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, esophageal resections, and video-assisted thoracic surgeries.

We provide cost-effective, high-quality postoperative pain management services including provision of postoperative comfort with placement of thoracic epidural catheters for these major thoracic procedures. As the only Level 1 one trauma center in the state, we frequently care for patients with major traumatic injuries of the thoracic aorta. We strive to provide excellence in clinical care and comprehensive training to our residents and students while achieving high patient satisfaction, this in concert with caring for these very complex patients and procedures.
