New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff. 

Dr. Kaitlyn Mize-Burnett

Dr. Kaitlyn Mize-Burnett, an obstetrics-gynecologist who practiced for the last nine years at Oxford Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates in Oxford, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of OB-GYN in the School of Medicine. 

Board-certified in OB-GYN, Mize-Burnett graduated in 2012 from the School of Medicine at UMMC, where she completed her OB-GYN residency. She has been the recipient of a number of research and scholastic honors throughout her career. 

A member of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Medical Association and the Mississippi State Medical Association, Mize-Burnett is the chair of the Mississippi section of ACOG. Her record of community service is extensive. 

Her special interests are maternal mental health and postpartum care.

Dr. Priya Patel

Dr. Priya Patel, an allergist recently in practice at Cone Health Allergy & Asthma Center of North Carolina, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics-allergy in the School of Medicine.  

Board-certified in allergy and immunology and in internal medicine, Patel earned her medical degree in 2018 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. At UMMC, she completed her internal medicine residency and a fellowship in allergy and immunology. 

Throughout her career, she has earned a number of honors and awards for scholarship and leadership. She is the coauthor of several per-reviewed research publications and has participated in a number of scientific presentations at state, regional and national conferences and meetings.  

She has an extensive record of community and volunteer service and is a member of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, and American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

Dr. Matthew Yeomans

Dr. Matthew Yeomans, recently an assistant professor of exercise science at the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of advanced biomedical education in the School of Medicine. 

Certified in Advanced Engineering Systems in Motion by the Georgia Institute of Technology, Yeomans earned a master’s degree in kinesiology at LSU, where, in 2020, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Kinesiology.  

Before joining the faculty at USC Upstate, he served for three years as an assistant professor of health and human performance at the University of Tennessee at Martin.  

Yeomans is the coauthor of several research publications, has participated in a dozen national and regional scientific presentations, and has received grant funding for a variety of projects. A member of the Southeast Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine, he also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Motor Behavior.  

His committee service is extensive and he has broad experience as a mentor to undergraduate and graduate students.
