New faculty join UMMC academic ranks
Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.
Dr. Nicholas Derrico
Dr. Nicholas Derrico is joining the Department of Neurosurgery as an assistant professor.
Before assuming this role, Derrico served as the administrative chief neurosurgery resident at UMMC and mentored medical students through the summer research program.
A graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont, Derrico earned a Bachelor of Arts in molecular biology, biochemistry and political science. He went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Joshua Dwight Irby
A graduate of the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine has returned to teach the next generation of physicians. Dr. Joshua Dwight Irby has joined the Department of Anesthesiology as an assistant professor.
Irby earned his medical degree from the UMMC School of Medicine in 2021. He recently completed his cardiothoracic anesthesiology residency at the Medical Center, where he also served as chief resident. Throughout his time at UMMC, Irby demonstrated a strong commitment to leadership and service. He served in several leadership positions within the School of Medicine, including as a student ambassador for prospective medical students. Most recently, he was a committee member for UMMC's anesthesiology residency program.

Dr. Kara Lynn Mabus
Dr. Kara Lynn Mabus has joined the Department of Pediatrics as an assistant professor.
Mabus earned her Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in psychology from Mississippi State University before completing her APA-accredited clinical psychology internship at UMMC. She currently serves as a postdoctoral research fellow in infant and early childhood mental health.
A licensed psychologist, Mabus provides clinical care through several statewide behavioral health initiatives, including Mississippi Behavioral Health in Infants and Preschoolers, Child Access to Mental Health and Psychiatry, CHAMP for Moms and Perinatal to Preschool.
In addition to her clinical practice, Mabus serves as a co-investigator on multiple federally funded behavioral health grants and is actively involved in teaching, clinical supervision and research.
