New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff. 

Dr. Erick Bourassa-Price

Dr. Erick Bourassa-Price, recently an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Physician Assistant Studies at Mississippi College in Clinton, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an associate professor of advanced biomedical education in the School of Medicine. 

Bourassa-Price earned his medical degree in 2014 from the University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine in the Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius after receiving his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences-Pharmacology from the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in Oxford.  

Before serving more than 10 years on the faculty of Mississippi College, where he developed a new neuroscience program, he also taught at the University of Mississippi, Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville and University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine. 

Bourassa-Price is the author of four textbooks on topics including pharmacology, histology and cell biology. He is the co-author of several scientific articles published in professional journals and has participated in a number of national conference presentations.  

He is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, serving a term as president of the Mississippi Chapter; Mississippi Academy of Sciences, currently serving as vice chair of the Neuroscience Division; American Physiological Society; American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics; and Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. He has also served as a Continuing Medical Education Provider for the Mississippi Association of Nurse Practitioners.  

Bourassa-Price has served as a peer-reviewer for scientific journals and textbook chapters.

Susan Kim Manning

Susan Kim Manning, recently a PRN stroke nurse at Methodist Rehabilitation Center in Jackson, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor of nursing in the School of Nursing.  

Manning received her BSN in 2018 from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., before earning her MSN-Nurse Educator degree at the UMMC School of Nursing. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at the University of Mississippi. 

Manning worked for seven years as an elementary school teacher in Atlanta and New Orleans before training as a behavior analysis therapist. She worked for two years as an oncology nurse at UMMC before joining Blackledge Face Center in Jackson as a PRN surgical nurse.  She also served as a surgical nurse at EyeCare Surgery Center in Jackson, nurse circulator at what is now Children’s of Mississippi and nurse educator/clinical instructor at Holmes Community College in Ridgeland.  

She has received several honors for academic achievements and has a number of years of volunteer and community service to her credit.

Dr. George Souza

Dr. George Souza, recently a research assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of physiology and biophysics in the School of Medicine.  

Souza received his Master of Physiology in 2013 from the School of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he then earned his PhD in Physiology. He received post-doctoral training as a research associate and then as a research scientist in the UVA Department of Pharmacology. As a trainee and investigator, he received several awards and honors.  

Souza is the primary author or co-author of more than two dozen scientific publications and serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals. He has received research support from the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association and Sao Paulo Research Foundation.  

Souza, an expert on neural control of circulation and breathing, has a number of oral presentations at international conferences to his credit, as well as around 30 abstracts submitted in scientific conferences. 

He is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, American Heart Association, American Physiological Society and Brazilian Physiological Society.
