
New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.
Dr. Sheeraz G. Abro

Dr. Sheeraz G. Abro, recently a nephrology fellow at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of medicine-nephrology in the School of Medicine.
Abro earned his medical degree in 2016 at Chandka Medical College in Pakistan and completed his internal medicine residency at Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences in Pakistan. He served for two years as a staff physician in District Hospital Kandiaro in Sindh, Pakistan.
During his career, Abro has received several awards and honors for his academic and research achievements. He is the co-author of peer-reviewed research publications and has participated in a number of scientific poster presentations. His volunteer experience is extensive.
He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, American College of Physicians, American Heart Association and other professional organizations.

Dr. Pratim Guha Niyogi

Dr. Pratim Guha Niyogi, recently a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Biostatistics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor in the Department of Data Science, John D. Bower School of Population Health.
Guha Niyogi earned his PhD in statistics from Michigan State University after receiving a Master of Statistics with specialization in biostatistics and data analysis from the Indian Statistical Institute. His PhD dissertation focused on the development of statistical methodologies for neuroimaging studies.
He participated in a summer research program at Oak Ridge National Lab through the Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship program funded by the National Science Foundation and had a summer research internship at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins.
His research interests include functional and distributional data analysis, modeling of massive and complex data, nonparametric statistics, statistics in digital health technologies, neuroimaging and other related health sciences.
He is engaged in developing cutting-edge approaches for analyzing real-time data collected from digital health technologies with a specific emphasis on understanding physical activity and sleep patterns to predict the onset of neurological disorders.
He is the co-author of several publications in leading statistics and scientific journals and serves as a reviewer for reputable statistics journals. Guha Niyogi, who has participated in several professional conferences and workshops, has been recognized numerous times for his research and academic achievements.

Dr. Rahul Mehta

Dr. Rahul Mehta, recently a professor of clinical otolaryngology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, has joined the Medical Center faculty as a professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery in the School of Medicine.
Board certified in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, Mehta specializes in otology and skull base surgery. He received his medical degree in 1997 from SCB Medical College, Utkal University in India. He completed a residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at T.N. Medical College, University of Mumbai, India, followed by a residency in the Surgical Otolaryngology Training Program of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the UK.
He also completed clinical fellowships in rhinology at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and skull base surgery/neurotology at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center/LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Recently, he graduated from Managing Health Care Delivery program at Harvard Business School.
He has served as an attending surgeon at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University, in the UK, and at Our Lady of the Lake RMC. His many academic appointments include chair of the Surgical Education Committee of the North American Skull Base Society.
Throughout his career, Mehta has received numerous honors and awards for his achievements as a researcher, scholar, teacher, clinician and mentor. He has an extensive record of volunteer service.
As a researcher, he is the co-author of dozens of refereed journal publications and abstracts and five book chapters. He has participated in a variety of scientific presentations at national and international conferences and meetings and has served as a book reviewer and a reviewer for several professional journals.
He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and member of the American Neurotology Society, North American Skull Base Society and American Academy of Otolaryngology and Head Neck Surgery.
