Dr. Christopher Vincent Hughes, former professor and chair of pediatric dentistry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 25. He was 68.

A Boston native, Hughes had a lifelong love of learning. After earning the DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, he pursued advanced training in pediatric dentistry at Case Western Reserve University and later obtained a PhD in microbiology from Georgetown University. His distinguished career in pediatric dentistry, education and research spanned more than 35 years, with faculty and leadership roles at Indiana University, Boston University, Rutgers University, and finally, UMMC, where he served from 2017 until his retirement in 2021.

Hughes was deeply committed to shaping the next generation of dentists, mentoring more than 200 students and residents throughout his career. He was a respected researcher and international lecturer, known for his contributions to pediatric dentistry and oral microbiology. Certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, he was an active member of the profession, serving as president of the Massachusetts Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and as a longtime editorial board member for the Journal of Pediatric Dentistry.

“He was well liked by fellow faculty and drove the department towards patient centric care,” said Dr. Pia Chatterjee Kirk, interim dean of the School of Dentistry. “He was proud to be an academician and was the first to congratulate one of us if there was good news to celebrate.”

Beyond academia, Hughes had a heart for service. A founding board member of the Global Smile Foundation, he participated in more than a dozen medical missions, providing dental care to children in underserved communities across Central and South America and Africa.

Despite his many professional accomplishments, Hughes was most devoted to his family. He had a passion for travel, completing visits to all 50 US states in 2023 and working toward a goal of visiting 50 countries. Known for his intelligence, humor and warmth, he loved music, crossword puzzles and a well-crafted one-liner.

Hughes made a lasting impact on his students, colleagues and the field of pediatric dentistry. He will be remembered not only for his expertise but for his generosity and kindness.
