New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff. 

Dr. Almas Binnal

Dr. Almas Binnal, who recently completed a Certificate Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the University of Florida College of Dentistry in Gainesville, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of care planning and restorative sciences in the School of Dentistry. 

She earned her Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2003 at the SDM College of Dental Sciences and Hospital in Dharwad, India, followed by her Master of Dental Surgery (Oral Medicine and Radiology) at the M.S. Ramaiah Dental College and Hospital in Bangalore, India.  

She also earned a postgraduate diploma in Health Promotion (tobacco control) from the Public Health Foundation of India in New Delhi. 

From 2010 to 2022, she served, successively, as an assistant professor, reader and associate professor in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology at Manipal University, India. 

She is the author or co-author of approximately 40 research publications and has made more than a dozen scientific presentations. She has also participated in numerous scientific conferences, workshops and advanced training programs. Her areas of interest include diagnostic imaging of oral and maxillofacial lesions, oral cancer and precancers, tobacco cessation and radiation protection. 

She is a member of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Indian Dental Association, Indian Red Cross Society and Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology.

Dr. Amy Potter

Dr. Amy Potter, recently a pediatric endocrinologist with Mississippi Center for Advanced Medicine, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatric endocrinology in the School of Medicine. 

Board-certified in pediatric endocrinology, Potter received her medical degree in 1997 from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She completed her residency in internal medicine and pediatrics, followed by a fellowship in combined adult and pediatric endocrinology, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  

For more than 12 years she served as an assistant professor at VUMC with clinical and teaching responsibilities. For five years, she was engaged in diabetes research.  

She then pursued an interest in medical writing for about four years before returning to patient care. 

Over the years, she delivered a number of invited continuing medical education lectures at local, regional and national conferences and workshops. A member of the Endocrine Society, Potter has also co-authored a textbook chapter.
