New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff. 

Matthew Martin

Martin

Dr. Matthew Martin, recently a radiology resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor of radiology in the School of Medicine.

Martin, a 2019 graduate of the UMMC School of Medicine, demonstrated leadership and academic scholarship in undergraduate and medical school, where he also served as a mentor.

His record of community and volunteer service includes work with the Jackson Free Clinic, American Academy of Family Physicians, Mississippi State Medical Association and other organizations and institutions.

Martin, who has made several scientific presentations, is a member of the Radiological Society of North America, American College of Radiology and American Board of Radiology.

Amy W. Smith

Dr. Amy W. Smith, recently the director of clinical operations in the Specialty Care Program Office of the Veterans Health Administration in Washington, D.C., has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor-education in the School of Nursing.

After receiving her BSN in 1991 from UMMC, where she received the Christine L. Oglevee Memorial Award as the School of Nursing’s outstanding baccalaureate graduate, Smith served as an RN and later as a case manager in internal medicine at the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing at UMMC in 1994 and her Doctor of Nursing Practice at Rush University in Chicago, Illinois, in 2008.

Smith, who was also a family nurse practitioner in the Mississippi Delta and a UMMC affiliate faculty member, served Veterans Affairs in a number of roles. Before her most recent role in the Specialty Care Program, she served as acting deputy director/chief consultant in the Office of Primary Care in Washington, D.C., and chief nursing officer/deputy chief medical officer for the South Central Veterans Affairs Health Care Network, which covers eight southern states.

She is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nurses Association. She is also a member of the honor societies, Sigma Theta Tau, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Theta Kappa. She has served on a variety of national and regional committees of the Veterans Health Administration, as well as on committees of the Mississippi Board of Nursing and the Mississippi State Department of Health.

In 2023, she was named the UMMC School of Nursing Alumna of the Year. Among her numerous other honors is the 2005 Secretary’s HeRO Award from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs for her leadership during the Hurricane Katrina response.

A board-certified family nurse practitioner who is also certified in executive nursing practice, Smith is also an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) and Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).

She has made more than 20 invited presentations nationally and is the author or co-author of several published articles, among them peer-reviewed journals.

Wendy J. Trickey

Wendy J. Trickey, recently a travel nurse in Mississippi, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor of nursing in the School of Nursing.

Trickey earned her BSN and, in 2017, her Master of Science in Nursing Leadership at the University of North Alabama in Florence.

She has worked in the nursing profession for 25 years, progressing from staff nurse to chief nursing officer. Her previous positions include chief nursing officer at Hardin Medical Center in Savannah, Tennessee; staff RN, nursing supervisor and nurse manager for North Mississippi Medical Center; nurse manager at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama; and clinical performance improvement coordinator for North Mississippi Health Services, where she developed and implemented a program to encourage problem-solving and improve patient outcomes. She also worked as a travel nurse in Tennessee.

Trickey is focused on fostering a problem-solving/learning culture to improve patient outcomes.
