
New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.
Dr. Raed A. Bahelah

Dr. Raed A. Bahelah, recently an associate professor in the Department of Public Health and Prevention Science at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an associate professor of population health science in the John D. Bower School of Population Health.
Bahelah received his MD in human medicine from the University of Aden Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Aden, Yemen, in 2003 before earning his Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University in New Orleans. At Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, in 2016, he earned his PhD in Public Health with a concentration in epidemiology. He also trained as a pediatric resident at Al-Wehda Teaching Hospital, Ministry of Public Health and Population, in Aden, Yemen.
Bahelah earned numerous honors and awards for research and academic achievement, including a Fulbright Scholarship toward his master’s degree in public health.
For five years, he served as an instructor in the Department of Social Medicine and Public Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Aden. He also acquired teaching experience at Baldwin Wallace University, FIU and the University of Aden. His record of mentorship is extensive.
He served as interim chair of the Department of Public Health and Prevention Science at Baldwin Wallace University, where he also was chair of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.
Bahelah gained experience as a researcher for the Louisiana State Department of Health and Hospitals, Tulane University/LSU in New Orleans and FIU. He is the co-author of approximately 30 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has participated in a number of abstract and oral presentations. He has served as an ad hoc journal reviewer or editorial board member for a variety of professional journals and as an expert reviewer for several scientific textbooks.
He is a member of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, American Public Health Association, Society for Epidemiologic Research and other professional organizations.

Dr. Shane M. McKinney

Dr. Shane M. McKinney, recently assistant medical director of the Pediatric Emergency Department and assistant professor of pediatric emergency medicine at USA Health Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile, Alabama, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatric emergency medicine in the School of Medicine.
He earned his medical degree in 2012 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine and holds a Master of Science in Management of Technology from Georgia Tech University in Atlanta.
He completed his pediatric residency at UAB and a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, in Little Rock.
Before joining USA Health, he was an attending physician in pediatric emergency medicine at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Prior to earning his medical degree, he worked a number of years in a variety of professional positions, including systems engineer, data team manager, managing consultant, director of consulting services and managed care/reimbursement specialist.
As a researcher, he has numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and oral presentations to his credit. He is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Emergency Medicine and other professional associations.

Dr. John E. Shaughnessy II

Dr. John E. Shaughnessy III, recently a vascular surgery fellow at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of surgery-vascular in the School of Medicine.
After earning his medical degree in 2017 at the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport, Louisiana, Shaughnessy completed his general surgery residency at UMMC.
The recipient of a number of academic awards and scholarships, he is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, Society for Vascular Surgery, American Medical Association, and Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society (VESS).
Shaughnessy has made numerous research presentations at regional and national conferences, including VESS, South Shore Vascular Society and Boston Fellows Case-Conference.
