New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff. 

Dr. Sean M. Duke

Dr. Sean M. Duke, recently a vascular neurology fellow at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University in St. Louis, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of neurology in the School of Medicine. 

He earned his Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences at UMMC before receiving his medical degree in 2019 from the UMMC School of Medicine, where he participated in the Medical Student Research Program.  

Before his fellowship at Washington University, he completed his residency in neurology at University Hospitals, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he received a Leadership in Medical Education certification through Case Western’s School of Business. As a fellow at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, he also received certifications in neurovascular ultrasound and Telehealth Stroke through the American Heart Association. 

The recipient of a number of awards and honors as a medical student and as a resident, he has 15 scientific publications and presentations to his credit and is a member of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology, American Society for Neuroimaging, American Medical Association and American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Maxwell Bridford James

Dr. Maxwell Bridford James, recently a pediatric cardiac anesthesiology fellow at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Emory University, in Atlanta, Georgia, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of anesthesiology in the School of Medicine. 

James, a Jackson native, earned his medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, New York, before completing his residency in anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, where, in 2022, he received the Outstanding Achievement Award as a resident in perioperative medicine. He also completed a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.  

At Vanderbilt and Columbia, he was recognized for his commitment to diversity and underserved communities.  

James is the co-author of a number of research abstracts, presentations and publications.

Julie Sparks Russell

Julie Sparks Russell, recently a nurse practitioner at Baptist Medical Group in Oxford, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor in the School of Nursing.  

Russell, who earned a Master of Science in Family Practice Nurse/Nursing in 2017 at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, also worked five years as a nurse practitioner for Baptist Medical Group in Oxford. 

For eight years, she worked for North Mississippi Health Services, first as an emergency department unit coordinator in Iuka, then as a registered nurse in the surgical intensive care unit in Tupelo. She also has experience as a nurse practitioner in pulmonary and sleep medicine.  

Previously, at UMMC, she served as registered nurse and as an RN care coordinator for the Children’s of Mississippi Specialty Clinic. 

The recipient of numerous academic honors, Russell is a member of a variety of professional organizations and honor societies. Among them are the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American Nurses Association, Mississippi Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Sigma Alpha Lambda. 

Russell’s record of community service and volunteer activities is extensive.
