New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff. 

Dr. Michaella Scopel

Dr. Michaella Scopel, recently an anesthesiology resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of anesthesiology in the School of Medicine. 

Scopel, who earned her medical degree in 2020 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, gained several years of research experience at UAB in the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care; Department of Molecular and Cellular Pathology; Department of Urology; and Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care. 

Scopel has several scientific publications and poster presentations to her credit. She has an extensive record of leadership and volunteerism, including several weeks with Engineers Without Borders in the African nation of Zambia, where she helped design and build a community-centered infrastructure promoting clean water and sanitation.

Dr. Sarabjeet Kour Sudan

Sudan

Dr. Sarabjeet Kour Sudan, recently a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pathology, Mitchell Cancer Institute, at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor of cell and molecular biology in the School of Medicine.  

After earning an MS in biotechnology at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in Katra, India, she pursued her PhD at CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology in Chandigarh, India, and at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India, earning her degree in 2019.  

Sudan, who has received numerous honors and awards during her career, is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research.  

She has served as a reviewer for various scientific journals, is the coauthor of numerous scientific journal publications and abstracts, and is the co-holder of a patent.

Dr. Juliana Sitta

Juliana Sitta
Sitta

Dr. Juliana Sitta, recently a diagnostic radiology resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has joined the Medical Center faculty as instructor of radiology in the School of Medicine. 

Sitta earned her medical degree in 2015 at the Universidade de Caxias do Sul in Brazil. She completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at Hospital Pompeia in Caxias do Sul before commencing her second diagnostic radiology residency in 2020 at UMMC, where she is also currently pursuing a graduate degree in Biomedical Sciences. 

Sitta, who has been awarded a number of academic and research honors, is the coauthor of several publications in scientific journals. She has coauthored or participated in more than 80 peer-reviewed abstracts and poster presentations, as well as a variety of oral presentations.
