New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.
Dr. Wilson W. Helmhout
Dr. Wilson W. Helmhout, recently an internal medicine resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of medicine-hospitalist in the School of Medicine.
Helmhout, who earned her medical degree in 2021 at the UMMC School of Medicine, received several academic honors and participated in a number of volunteer projects, including mentorship. She also has an extensive record of community service in the Jackson area.
Prior to earning her medical degree, she had work experience at Family Medicine Group of Oxford.
Her research experience includes several scientific poster presentations.

Dr. Yarelis Segui-Acevedo
Dr. Yarelis Segui-Acevedo, recently a pediatric resident at University of South Alabama Health Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile, Alabama, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine.
Segui-Acevedo, who received her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in St. Kitts, St. Kitts and Nevis, in 2020, earned a number of honors and awards for leadership, teaching and professionalism.
She has made numerous scientific presentations at various professional conferences and has participated in several research projects.
A native of the Caribbean, Segui-Acevedo has a keen interest in helping underrepresented populations.
She is a member of various professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, AAP Section on Bioethics, AAP Section on Genetics, AAP Section on Global Health and more.

Dr. Haley Hobart Thomas
Dr. Haley Hobart Thomas, recently a pediatrics resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics-neonatology in the School of Medicine.
She is currently working at the Children’s of Mississippi Greenwood Clinic in Greenwood and, also through Children’s of Mississippi, as a newborn hospitalist with the Delta Health System in Greenville.
Thomas, who graduated from the UMMC School of Medicine in 2021, received several awards as a student and resident and was a Mississippi State Medical Association Student Advocacy Training Scholar. She filled a number of leadership roles, including preceptor and mentor. Her research experience includes participation in quality improvement projects and publishing articles in professional journals.
She has an extensive record of community and volunteer service, including work at the Jackson Free Clinic and as a member of the UMMC COVID-19 Student Response Team.
Thomas is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
