New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.
Dr. John J. Durfey
Dr. John J. Durfey, recently a private practice anesthesiologist in Jackson, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of anesthesiology in the School of Medicine.
Durfey, who graduated from the School of Medicine at UMMC in 1988, completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1992.
Board-certified in anesthesiology, Durfey was in private practice at Jackson Anesthesia Associates for more than 30 years before joining the Medical Center and is experienced in a wide range of subspecialties.
He is a member of the board of directors for the Medical Assurance Company of Mississippi, which he also serves as a member of the Compensation Committee and the Investment Committee.

Blake Lowrie
Blake Lowrie, recently an emergency services RN supervisor in the Emergency Department of St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor of nursing in the School of Nursing.
Lowrie received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing, followed by his Master of Science in Nursing in 2021, from the School of Nursing at UMMC.
A member of the Theta Beta Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the American Heart Association, Lowrie also worked at St. Dominic Hospital as a staff nurse and fill-in team leader in the Emergency Department.
He has completed the Trauma Nursing Core Course of the Emergency Nurses Association and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training program of the Mississippi Coalition Against Sexual Assault.
Lowrie has participated in a number of community service events, including the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Jackson Walk for Diabetes, and Sickle Cell Annual 5K Event for Sickle Cell Awareness.
