New faculty join UMMC academic ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff. 

Dr. Ashley Longwitz

Dr. Ashley Longwitz has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of nursing instruction in the School of Nursing.

Longwitz, who earned her Master of Science in Nursing, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, at UMMC in 2011, received her Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2023 at the Medical Center.

Her professional experience includes stints at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson as a staff RN, Telemetry Unit; at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian as a staff RN, ICU; and at UMMC as a staff RN, Trauma Surgery Unit and Orthopaedic Unit.

Most of her practice experience as a nurse practitioner was at Jefferson Medical Associates in Laurel in the Internal Medicine Department, focusing on diabetes education and management. She has recently been working as a healthy systems diabetes educator and as an executive clinical educator for obesity with Novo Nordisk, Inc. in Plainsboro, New Jersey.  

Throughout her career, she has earned several academic and professional awards and honors, including the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses at UMMC, induction into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and induction into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

Longwitz is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists, Diabetes Coalition of Mississippi, and Mississippi Obesity Society.

Caitlyn Mizelle

Mizelle

Caitlyn Mizelle, recently a speech language pathologist at Pediatric Haven in Gluckstadt, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery in the School of Medicine.

Mizelle earned her Master of Education in dyslexia therapy in 2019 and her Master of Science in speech-language pathology in 2021 at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Certified in clinical competence for speech-language pathology, Mizelle has also served as a dyslexia therapist for the Lamar County School District in Purvis and as a speech language pathologist for Tara Cares, Brandon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brandon.

She is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
