Dr. Luiz M. Lima recently joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of anesthesiology in the School of Medicine.

He completed his fellowship in acute pain medicine and regional anesthesia at the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York before arriving at UMMC.

Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Lima began his career in health care as a dentist lieutenant in the navy before pursuing a medical degree. He graduated from the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro and specialized in anesthesiology, becoming certified by the Brazilian Board of Anesthesiology in 2014.

Lima has worked extensively both in military health care settings and in private practice, gaining experience in anesthesiology. His interest in regional anesthesia was sparked during his role as a dentist providing local anesthesia for facial/ dental procedures and performing nerve blocks during his anesthesia residency in Brazil.

After completing his residency at UMMC, where he excelled became certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, Lima’s interest in regional anesthesia further developed with the fellowship. The opioid crisis and the significance of regional anesthesia in reducing opioid use during the perioperative period drove his research focus and clinical practice.

Lima is actively involved in research, having co-authored articles in peer-reviewed journals, presented at national conferences, and is a member of prominent regional anesthesia societies in America and Europe.

He was drawn to UMMC to teach residents about regional anesthesia and point-of-care ultrasound while contributing to improve the system to address the challenges posed by the opioid crisis in Mississippi.

He is dedicated to advancing the field of anesthesiology.
