Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.

Monday, Feb. 11

Microbiology faculty to discuss cytomegalovirus trafficking

Dr. Ritesh Tandon, associate professor of microbiology and immunology, will present the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology seminar, "Manipulation of Host Vesicular Trafficking by Cytomegalovirus During Maturation," at 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, in classroom 3A.

Emory global health expert to talk nasopharynx transformation

Dr. Jorge E. Vidal, associate professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, will present the Microbiology and Immunology seminar, "Molecular Studies of Pneumococcal Transformation Asymmetry in the Human Nasopharynx," at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, in room 3A.

MS SC justice to speak at Connect Share Advance event

Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Dawn Beam will present the Group on Women in Medicine and Science "Connect Share Advance" seminar, "Lean In: Perspectives from a Mississippi Supreme Court Justice," at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 12, in room CW 308 of the Classroom Wing.

Ohio State faculty to cover students' anatomical education role

Dr. Jennifer Burgoon, assistant professor of biomedical education and anatomy at Ohio State University, Columbus, will give the Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences Seminar Series presentation, "The Role of Students’ Self-efficacy Beliefs in Anatomical Education," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12, in classroom 3A (room N318 on the North Wing).

Wednesday, Feb. 13

InclUsive Conversation to tackle interpersonal violence

Paula Bingham Granger, training and technical assistance coordinator at the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence, will give the Office of Diversity and Inclusion's "InclUsive Conversation," "Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Interpersonal Violence," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, in room CW-106 of the Classroom Wing.

Thursday, Feb. 14

Reneker, Hester to speak at TEDxJackson 2019

​Dr. Jennifer C. Reneker, associate professor of physical therapy in the School of Health Related Professions, and Dr. Robert L. Hester, professor of physiology and biophysics, are slated to speak at TEDxJackson 2019, scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.

Tuesday, Feb. 19

Oregon dentistry chair to keynote SOD Research Day

Dr. Jack L. Ferracane, professor and chair of restorative dentistry at the Oregon Health and Science University, will present the School of Dentistry Research Day 2019 keynote lecture, "Is the Polymerization Stress Produced During the Curing of Dental Composite Restorations Clinically Meaningful?" from 8-9 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

SOD Research Day activities also will include poster sessions from 9:30-11:30 a.m., an awards luncheon at 11:30 a.m. and the presentation of certificates and awards at 12:15 p.m. in the student union.

Yale professor to explain how hunger promotes life

Dr. Tamas Horvath, professor and chair of comparative medicine, Jean and David W. Wallace Professor of Biomedical Research, professor of neurobiology and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Yale University School of Medicine, will give a Grand Rounds presentation, “Hunger Promotes Life,” at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 20, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

The presentation is sponsored by the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research and the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center.

UT-Southwestern faculty to give two otolaryngology talks

​Dr. Matthew Ryan, associate professor and vice chair for education and quality at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, will present “The Allergic Fungal Sinusitis Story” at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, and “Clinical Decision Making in Rhinology” at 7 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, in the 5East Conference Room (Suite H500).

UMass faculty to offer temperamental enhancement

Dr. Luanne Thorndyke, professor of medicine and vice provost for faculty affairs at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, will give the UMMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science workshop, "The Power of Utilizing Temperaments to Enhance Your Leadership Capabilities," from 10 a.m.-noon on Friday, Feb. 22, in second-floor conference rooms A-D in the student union.

Mayo Clinic faculty to discuss perineural dexmedetomidine

Dr. Adam Niesen, chair of the North Division, fellowship director of regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine and assistant professor of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, will give the Department of Anesthesiology Grand Rounds presentation, "Perineural Dexmedetomidine," from 6:30-7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, in room LH122 of the medical education building.
