Edelman Lecture, MedEdPORTAL review top next week's agenda

A number of interesting events is scheduled for next week at the Medical Center.

Former U.S. agriculture secretary to give Edelman Lecture

Mike Espy, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and former U.S. Representative from the Second District of Mississippi, will present the third annual Marian Wright Edelman Lectureship from 9:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, in Conference Rooms A-C in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

The lectureship, which will focus on food and food systems as social determinants of health, is presented by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities and Mississippi State University.

Wednesday, Sept. 7

Faculty, students to present HTN practice talks

An associate professor, instructors, postdoctoral fellows and an MSRP student are scheduled to present the 2016 Council on Hypertension Practice Talks, part of the Physiology Seminar Series, from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7 in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Participating in the event will be Dr. Nicola Aberdein, postdoctoral fellow; Dr. Ji Li, associate professor of physiology and biophysics; Dr. Frank Spradley, instructor in transplant surgery; William Stewart, an MSRP student; Dr. Erin Taylor, a postdoctoral research fellow; and Dr. Zhen Wang, instructor in physiology and biophysics.

Thursday, Sept. 8

LSU medical education specialist to open MedEdPORTAL

Dr. Sheila W. Chauvin, professor and director of the Office of Medical Education Research and Development in the School of Medicine at the LSU Health Teaching Academy, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, will give the Academic Development and Discovery Seminar (ADDS) presentation, “MedEdPORTAL,” at noon on Thursday, Sept. 8, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).

The seminar is sponsored by the Office of Academic Development in the Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Anyone interested in educational scholarship and publication is invited.

Peds epilepsy program director to discuss seizures, tx

Dr. Brad Ingram, director of the Pediatric Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, will give a lunchtime presentation, “Understanding Epilepsy,” from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8, in the University Hospital Administration Large Conference Room.

Ingram will explain different types of seizures, new treatment options and what to do for someone having a seizure.

Saturday, Sept. 10

Question dental health? Discover it at Children's Museum

Dr. Lubna Fawad, associate professor of pediatric dentistry and community oral health, will give the next “Question it? Discover it!” presentation from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Mississippi Children's Museum on 2145 Museum Boulevard off Lakeland Drive in Jackson.

Fawad will discuss what's hidden in the mouth and how to keep it clean. The event is included with general admission to the museum.
