A number of interesting events is scheduled for the upcoming week at the Medical Center.

Orthopaedist to offer wellness education opportunity

Dr. Robert McGuire, M. Beckett Howorth Professor of Orthopaedics, will discuss bone health and how it relates to the body's overall health during an “Everyday Wellness” presentation from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, in R354 (upper amphitheatre).

Sponsored by the Department of Preventive Medicine, Everyday Wellness is a free education series that provides helpful, healthy living tips. All Medical Center employees are invited.

Anesthesiologist to discuss myelomeningocele challenges

Dr. Debnath Chatterjee, associate professor at Children's Hospital Colorado, will give the Department of Anesthesiology Grand Rounds presentation, “Fetal Myelomeningocele Repair: Perioperative Challenges and Outcomes,” from 6:30-7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20, in classroom 3A.

Journal club to discuss depression in vulnerable youth

Dr. Crystal Lim, assistant professor of psychiatry and director of the Child and Family Health Lab in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, will serve as the discussion leader for the next Health Disparities Journal Club session, scheduled from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, in conference room D on the second floor of the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

Lim will discuss “Toward Scientific Equity for the Prevention of Depression and Depressive Symptoms in Vulnerable Youth.”

All Medical Center faculty, staff, and students are invited. The journal club is sponsored by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities.

Physiologist to offer large-scale analysis of genomes

Dr. James Wilson, professor of physiology and biophysics and professor of rheumatology, will give the Physiology Seminar Series presentation, "Large Scale Analysis of Whole Genome Sequence in Humans," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Tuesday, Sept. 6

Former U.S. agriculture secretary to give Edelman Lecture

Mike Espy, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and former U.S. Representative from the Second District of Mississippi, will present the third annual Marian Wright Edelman Lectureship from 9:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, in Conference Rooms A-C in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

The lectureship, which will focus on food and food systems as social determinants of health, is presented by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities and Mississippi State University.
