Prostate cancer mini symposium, inaugural Chen Lectureship top week's agenda

A number of interesting events is scheduled for the upcoming week at the Medical Center.

Wednesday, Aug. 3

Mini symposium to illuminate prostate cancer research

The UMMC Cancer Institute, Tougaloo College and Jackson State University will sponsor the 2016 Prostate Cancer Research Mini Symposium, scheduled from 9 a.m.-noon on Wednesday, Aug. 3, in room R153 (lower amphitheatre).

The symposium will conclude the Mississippi Prostate Cancer HBCU Undergraduate Training Program, which is supported in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense.

Mini symposium speakers will include UMMC Cancer Institute members and graduate students, faculty from Tougaloo College and Jackson State University and former HBCU program participants. 2016 participants Courtney Mangum from Tougaloo and Ornella Amosh from JSU also will present their summer's work.

Physiologist to examine periodontal infections, CV disease

Dr. Kristine DeLeon-Pennell, instructor in physiology and biophysics, will give the Physiology Seminar Series presentation, "Periodontal Infections and Cardiovascular Disease: Getting to the Heart of the Matter," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Arizona scientist to present inaugural Chen Lectureship

Dr. Gholam A. Peyman, professor of basic medical sciences at the University of Arizona at Phoenix and joint professor of optical science and engineering at the University of Arizona at Tucson, will deliver the inaugural Ching. J. Chen, M.D., Lectureship in Ophthalmology, “An Automatic Holographic Adaptive Phoropter,” at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Embassy Suites in Ridgeland.

Hosted by the UMMC Department of Ophthalmology, the lectureship is named in honor of Chen, a full-time professor of ophthalmology who stepped down last year as chair of the Department of Ophthalmology to devote more time to research, education and patient care. He's served on the Medical Center faculty for 37 years.

Former U.S. agriculture secretary to give Edelman Lecture

Mike Espy, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and former U.S. Representative from the Second District of Mississippi, will present the third annual Marian Wright Edelman Lectureship from 9:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, in Conference Rooms A-C in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

The lectureship, which will focus on food and food systems as social determinants of health, is presented by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities and Mississippi State University.

Vitter, Woodward to speak at fall faculty meeting

Dr. Jeffrey S. Vitter, University of Mississippi chancellor, and Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs, are scheduled to speak during the fall faculty meeting at noon on Thursday, Sept. 29, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).

Vitter and Woodward will provide updates on the university and the Medical Center in the next fiscal year. The agenda also will include recognition of faculty with 20 years of service.
