Chancellor's town hall meeting to feature 'State of the U'
Vitter
University of Mississippi Chancellor Jeffrey S. Vitter will host a town hall meeting at 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, at the Oxford campus.
Members of the university community of the various UM campuses may participate in the event, which will feature Vitter's State of the University speech.
UMMC faculty, staff and students unable to attend may view a live stream of the presentation in the Bebe Richardson Conference Room in Hospital Administration.
The proceedings are expected to last a little more than an hour.

Oklahoma geriatrician to focus on brain-aging regulation

Dr. William E. Sonntag, Professor and Donald W. Reynolds Chair of Aging Research and director of the Reynolds Oklahoma Center on Aging at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, Oklahoma City, will present “Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF)-1 Regulation of Cerebrovascular and Brain Aging,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.
All Medical Center faculty, staff and students are invited. Refreshments will be available on a first-come basis.

Boston psychiatrist to discuss student behavioral health

Dr. Shella Dennery, instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and program director of the Boston Children's Hospital Neighborhood Partnerships (CHNP) Program, will give the Psychiatry Grand Round presentation, “Building Capacity in Schools: Supporting the Behavioral Health of Students and School Communities,” at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, in room 106 of the Classroom Wing.

Former U.S. agriculture secretary to give Edelman Lecture

Mike Espy, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and former U.S. Representative from the Second District of Mississippi, will present the third annual Marian Wright Edelman Lectureship from 9:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, in Conference Rooms A-C in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.
The lectureship, which will focus on food and food systems as social determinants of health, is presented by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities and Mississippi State University.

UM chancellor to speak at fall faculty meeting

Dr. Jeffrey S. Vitter, University of Mississippi chancellor, and Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs, are scheduled to speak during the fall faculty meeting at noon on Thursday, Sept. 29, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).
Vitter and Woodward will provide updates on the university and the Medical Center in the next fiscal year. The agenda also will include recognition of faculty with 20 years of service.

UMMC, statewide scholars to compete in RICE Bowl
Top scholars from local colleges, including Belhaven University, Jackson State University, Mississippi College, Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi, will join Medical Center students in the annual Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl, an interactive health-care competition with audience participation, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the UMMC Conference Center at the Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center.
Sponsored by the Office of Population Health and the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, the RICE Bowl is an academic competititon in which team members answer questions and solve a complex health-care case. Attendees will have the opportunity to sound off during the event as well.
