A number of interesting events is scheduled in the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.

UMMC physiologist to cover brain's regulating role

Dr. Jussara do Carmo, assistant professor of physiology and biophysics, will present the physiology seminar, "Role of the Brain Melanocortin System in Regulating Appetite, Blood Pressure and Peripheral Glucose Utilization," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

On the horizon

UAB neurologist to discuss deep brain stimulation

Dr. Harrison C. Walker, associate professor of neurology and medical director for surgical movement disorders at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will present "Deep Brain Stimulation for Movement Disorders" from noon-1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, in room CW 308 of the Classroom Wing.

All Medical Center faculty, staff and students are invited. Lunch will be available to the first 100 in attendance.

Search committee to host 'listening session' at UMMC

Members of the Board Search Committee leading the search for the next chancellor of the University of Mississippi will hear from constituency groups in a Campus Listening Session at UMMC on Thursday, Aug. 20.  The session will be in the Student Union but the time has yet to be determined.

The discussions will center on the qualities and qualifications stakeholders believe the next institutional executive officer should possess.

UCSF community med expert to give Edelman Lecture

Dr. Paula Braveman, professor of family and community medicine and director of the Center on Social Disparities in Health at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), will deliver the 2015 Marian Wright Edelman Distinguished Lecture from 8:30-11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, in the Community Room at the Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center.

The Marian Wright Edelman Distinguished Lecture Series focuses on the social determinants of child health. Braveman has studied, published and brought awareness to health equity and the social determinants of child health, nationally and internationally, for more than 25 years.
