Pawel T. Pomianowski, MD
Specialties: Genetics and Genomics
Gender: Male
Biography: Dr. Pomianowski comes from Christiana Care Hospital where he was a Director of Medical Genetics and Genomics with an academic appointment at Thomas Jefferson School of Medicine.
At Christiana Care Hospital, Dr. Pomianowski built and developed cardiovascular genetics clinics, neurogenetics clinics, adult genetics clinics and supervised neonatal genetics and cancer genetics. While at ChristianaCare, Dr. Pomianowski built the only comprehensive Ehlers-Danlos clinic in Tri-state area where he identified and managed substantial sub-population of vEDS patients. He also, along with heart failure team, developed a multidisciplinary amyloidosis clinic.
Prior to arriving at Delaware, Dr. Pomianowski trained and worked at Yale School of Medicine where he was able to develop multidisciplinary aortopathy clinic which utilized exome sequencing for genome interrogation.
He also started second Clinical Genetics Clinic on the East Coast for veterans at West Haven VA (WHVA) in CT and served as a site champion for PHASER program at WHVA (Pharmacogenomic Action for Cancer Survivorship).
Dr. Pomianowski, is a member of the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics, European Society of Human Genetics as well as American Board of Internal Medicine. His academic interests are adult genetics. He has a number of scientific publications/presentations to his credit.
He and his team of genetic counselors offer a comprehensive cardiovascular, neurological and adult genetic assessment. They perform pre- and post-testing counseling which includes screening and management recommendations based on family history and/or genetic test results. They aim to assist with genetic diagnoses and instruct patients on the genetic impact to their personal and family health.
This team is interested in development of genetic services which can offer patient specific testing and management as per guidelines associated with each genetic etiology.
Training:
Internal Medicine Residency – Hershey Medical Center Penn State College of Medicine
Genetic and Genomics Fellowship: Yale School of Medicine
Postdoctoral Training: Yale School of Medicine (Translational Genomics)
Boards: ABMGG (American Board of Genetics and Genomics) and ABIM (Am. Board of IM)
My Approach to Healthcare
Adult Genetics and Genomics Department is utilizing information about the human genome and disease to transform how doctors predict, diagnose, and treat diseases with greater precision. I oversee the Adult Genetic Programs in cardiovascular genetics, cancer genetics, neurogenetics, and adult genetics which offer consultation, genetic testing and support for families with an increased risk of hereditary disorders. Some examples of genetic disorders which are fairly common in population and have strong genetic basis are: Amyloidosis, inherited cardiomyopathies, Marfan syndrome, EDS, breast cancers, colon cancers, seizures, among many others.
This program is unique to Mississippi and the only one of its kind in the state.
In order to support this patient-centered approach, the department uses germline genetic testing to identify inherited genetic changes. This testing helps doctors make more personalized treatment decisions based on the patient’s family history. Some genetic mutations have specific treatment options (options which would not be available to patients if the mutation were not known), other mutations have specific treatment options which mitigate disease progression. Genetic counseling for these family members is also offered and it is focused on risk factor reduction and preventive measures.
The future of precision medicine, lies in our ability to read a patient’s entire set of genes, their genome, and to target how we care for that patient based on his or her own unique genomic makeup.
