Biography: Dr. Manasa Gunturu MD is an AUPO Fellowship-trained Neuro-ophthalmologist and ABPN board-certified Neurologist. Dr. Gunturu serves as an associate professor in the Departments of Neurology and Ophthalmology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Dr. Gunturu earned her medical degree from Andhra Medical College in India. She completed her Neurology residency (MD) at UMMC followed by a Neuro-ophthalmology fellowship at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami.
Her clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of visual disorders related to neurological disease. She manages conditions such as idiopathic intracranial hypertension (formerly known as pseudotumor cerebri), optic neuritis, non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy, giant cell arteritis, diplopia- including ocular myasthenia gravis and visual problems resulting from strokes and brain tumors. She works collaboratively with colleagues in the Ophthalmology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Primary health and eye care providers, and is an active member of multidisciplinary teams focused on pituitary tumors, sarcoidosis, acute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO).
Dr. Gunturu is deeply committed to medical education. She teaches students and residents in both Neurology and Ophthalmology and established the monthly Neuro-Ophthalmology lecture series for resident education. From 2019 to 2024, she served in educational leadership roles, first as Associate Director and then as Director of the Neurology residency program at UMMC. She participates in multiple educational committees and quality improvement initiatives across departments.
She has authored numerous publications and has been invited to deliver lectures on Neuro-Ophthalmology and medical education. Dr. Gunturu is an active member of the American Academy of Neurology and the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society.
