Michael A. Collins, DO

Gender: Male

Biography: Michael A. Collins, D.O., is a board-certified psychiatrist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he serves as the Executive Vice Chair. His work spans clinical operations, service design, strategy and innovation, cross-functional coordination, clinical standards, quality, cross-divisional integration, and department-institution alignment. He practices in adult inpatient and consult-liaison psychiatry, with clinical concentrations in severe mental illness, psychopharmacology, catatonia, ECT/neuromodulation, and high-acuity behavioral health systems.

Dr. Collins is also involved in medical student and resident education, including leadership within the Medical Neuroscience and Behavior Clerkship and core-faculty for resident didactics. His institutional service includes work in hospital formulary stewardship, OPPE/FPPE processes, departmental clinical governance, admissions and clerkship subcommittees, and interdisciplinary workplace violence themes including threat assessment and safety workflows. His professional focus is the development of reliable, high-accountability systems and psychiatric services that support patients, learners, clinicians, and the broader missions of UMMC.

My Approach to Healthcare

I believe psychiatric care works best when patients feel respected, understood, and taken seriously. I try to approach each person with curiosity, humility, and clinical rigor, recognizing that mental health problems rarely have simple, one-size-fits-all answers. Together, we look at the problem from multiple angles and build a practical plan using the tools that fit best—therapy, medications, family support, clinic care, or hospital care when needed. The point of all of it is simple: to help life become safer, steadier, and easier to enjoy.
