University of Mississippi Medical Center endocrinologists know that testosterone is an important hormone for men regarding various aspects of life, including sex drive. Aging causes a normal decrease in the production of testosterone in men, but too little of the hormone can lead to erectile dysfunction, infertility, increased cardiovascular risk, obesity, and breast enlargement (gynecomastia).
"Male menopause" is an informal term for the decreased production of testosterone. Hormone replacement therapy may be an option to restore sex drive, fertility, muscle strength, and to prevent bone loss.
