Main ContentInstructions for Palatal Injuries
- The palatal injury will likely heal spontaneously. Initially, a brief episode of intraoral bleeding, which stops spontaneously, is common. Recommend OTC pain medication for next few days. Instruct parent that eating, speaking, and talking may be difficult for a few days. Soft diet for 5 days. Follow up in one week, or as otherwise instructed by your physician.
- Most children do not develop problems, but if parent notices any of the symptoms listed below, contact physician immediately:
- Decreased level of consciousness
- Irritability
- Vomiting
- Weakness of either arm or leg
- Headache
- Blurred vision or convulsions
- Neck swelling
- Bleeding from the mouth
Have the parent monitor closely for 48-72 hours.
