Biography

Dr. Leslie Musshafen currently serves as Associate Director of Administration of the Cancer Center and Research Institute and Assistant Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine. She is a member of the university’s Research Compliance Management Committee, Research Council, Information Knowledge Management Committee, Policy Oversight Committee, Committee on Institutional Committee Management, and Conflicts of Interest Committee, among others.

In addition to roles as principal investigator and other key personnel on a number of studies, Dr. Musshafen has more than 15 years of research administration experience. This experience includes oversight of a number of service and regulatory units including the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, Office of Clinical Trials, Human Research Office, Office of Animal Welfare, and Technology Transfer Office. She has also reviewed and administered hundreds of grants, contracts, and clinical trials from a variety of sponsors. More recent projects include the management of a $19.8M federal award for the build-out of a translational research center and incubator facility, legislative funding and construction of an $8M clinical research and trials unit, and the development, implementation, and management of a core facility.

Dr. Musshafen earned her undergraduate business administration degree from the University of Mississippi, a masters of business administration from Delta State University (summa cum laude), and a PhD in Population Health Science from the University of Mississippi Medical Center (summa cum laude) where she received the John D. Bower award in recognition of her exceptional potential in the field of population health. She is a Certified Research Administrator (CRA) and Certified Preaward Research Administrator (CPRA).

Dr. Musshafen’s research interests include health disparities/health equity and social determinants of health, particularly among vulnerable populations.
