A Message from the Chair

Summer may be a time for vacations and breaks, but at Children’s of Mississippi, we’re welcoming residents and fellows this summer and are excited to be training the next generation of pediatricians. In this issue of Pediatric Update, we’re sharing information on pediatric and neonatal research at Children’s of Mississippi, Pediatric Awards Day winners and Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency Spero Award honorees. As always, we’re thankful to have you all as partners in pediatrics, working together toward the goal of improving children’s health.

Dr. Anderson Collier, director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology and its Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, was awarded the D. Jeanette Pullen Chair during ceremonies June 22. The presentation comes as the center is planning for renovations later this year.

Pediatric Awards honor faculty, residents, fellows and staff

The Department of Pediatrics’ annual Awards Day had a fiery theme to match the achievements of faculty, residents and staff members.

Campaign for Children’s of Mississippi surpasses $100M goal with Gertrude C. Ford Foundation gift

The Campaign for Children’s of Mississippi raised $101.5 million to make dreams of a seven-story children’s hospital expansion a reality. The six-year campaign, brought to a successful conclusion with a $2.5 million gift from the Gertrude C. Ford Foundation, included donations from thousands of Mississippians from all walks of life.

The Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency honored Children’s of Mississippi’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit team and Emily Wade, a registered nurse in the unit, during its 2022 Spero Awards.

Omicron study published by New England Journal of Medicine

A Children's of Mississippi expert was one of the researchers who conducted a study recently published by the New England Journal of Medicine. The study examined the sustained protection and effectiveness of vaccination against the Delta and Omicron variants of COVID-19 in children.

Faculty research shines at Pediatric Academic Societies

Children’s of Mississippi was well-represented at the recent Pediatric Academic Societies meeting in Denver, presenting three platform sessions and five posters. Two faculty members served as panel chairs, and one Children’s of Mississippi presentation was a highlighted theme panel session.

Sanderson Farms Championship set for Sept. 26-Oct. 2

The 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship will tee off Sept. 26-Oct. 2 at the Country Club of Jackson. Since Sanderson Farms became the Title Sponsor in 2013, the tournament and Century Club Charities has contributed over $14.7 million to Friends of Children’s Hospital and other Mississippi charities.

Formula supply expected to increase, UMMC experts say

Parents may still see shortages of infant formula on store shelves, but efforts to put formula in parents’ hands should ease the crisis soon, University of Mississippi Medical Center experts say. Thanks to quick response and collaboration with suppliers, babies receiving care at UMMC have had the formula they need.
