Opportunities for Students of Disadvantaged Backgrounds

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at UMMC offers several scholarship opportunities for visiting medical students with disadvantaged backgrounds who faced a barrier or obstacle to obtaining higher education.

Scholarship Award Opportunities

First Look Invitation Award

• Join us May 23-25 and experience an all-expense paid “day in the life” of an otolaryngology resident at UMMC. (Note: All travel expenses will be reimbursed to award recipients.)
• Available to rising 4th year medical students considering otolaryngology.
• Up to 5 applicants who meet the criteria will receive the award.
• Applications must be received by April 26, 2024.

Godfrey Edward Arnold Clinical Rotation Award

• One-month clinical rotation in otolaryngology - head and neck surgery.
• Students must be eligible to participate in clinical rotations at the home medical school.
• Applications must be received no later than June 1, 2024.
• Scholarship features:
  • Financial assistance of $1500 stipend for travel and housing
  • Mentorship by department faculty members

Godfrey Edward Arnold Research Award Experience

• Three-month research rotation in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery available June through August.
• Open to any medical student following completion of at least one year of medical school education.
• Applications must be submitted no later than April 15, 2024.
• Scholarship features:
  • Financial assistance of $1500 per month stipend for travel and housing
  • Mentorship by department faculty members

Eligibility

Scholarship award opportunities are available to medical students of disadvantaged backgrounds who faced a barrier or obstacle to obtaining higher education.

Application Details

To apply, please submit a short essay describing experiences or circumstances that have posed a disadvantage toward achieving higher education. Examples to consider include but are not limited to: parental income, parents working multiple jobs, applicant working to support education, 1st generation college graduate, lack of resources, limited extracurricular activities growing up, exposure to childhood trauma, or experience of microaggressions or discrimination.

Applicants should submit the following:

1. Letter of interest detailing:
   • why the applicant is attracted to otolaryngology
   • any specific research interests
   • and a short essay/at least one paragraph describing why the applicant qualifies as disadvantaged student
2. Current transcript
3. Current resume or CV
4. Letter from your Dean of Student Affairs stating you are in good standing

About Dr. Godfrey Edward Arnold

Dr. Godfrey Edward Arnold completed medical school in his home country of Austria and received additional training in otolaryngology in Germany. In 1949, he immigrated to the United States. His interest in voice disorders led to national fame for his introduction of Teflon for vocal cord paralysis and influence on the subspecialty field of laryngology.

In 1963, Dr. Arnold was named Chief of the Division of Otolaryngology at UMMC and served as program director for the first otolaryngology residency program. Dr. Arnold remained chief of the division until his retirement in 1979.
