Gilliam, David E., M.D.

Specialties: Med/Peds General, Children's Hospital Medicine

Gender: Male

Biography: David Gilliam grew up in North Alabama. Attending medical school at UAB, he sought an Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency program that was welcoming and well-balanced. He found a home at UMMC. After completing Med-Peds residency at UMMC, he was a chief resident in Pediatrics, and then decided to stay as a pediatric hospitalist and attending in the Med-Peds resident continuity clinic. Currently, he works primarily as a hospitalist, but also splits time across several roles: APD with the Pediatrics residency program, medical director and physician advisor for coordinated care and utilization review, working in the inpatient rehab follow-up clinic, and as much time in the Med-Peds resident clinic as he can spare.

Outside of work, David enjoys spending time with his wife, Claire (also a pediatric hospitalist), and his four children: Kate, Caleb, Eleanor, and Maggie. He enjoys reading to his children and watching shows and playing outside with them. He enjoys planting a vegetable garden each Spring and then spending the Summer ignoring it as much as possible. He has ambitions to exercise and read books, but can usually be found listening to an audiobook or podcast or rewatching a familiar movie or TV show.

My Approach to Healthcare

I approach healthcare from a compassionate and pragmatic perspective. I consider real-world aspects of care, including education and understanding levels of patients and caregivers, access to care inpatient and outpatient, and other demands on families. I hope to make staying healthy or returning to health or activities a more attainable goal for every patient of mine.
