Biography: Janice Scaggs is a certified nurse-midwife who is currently on faculty at UMMC as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She grew up in Meridian, Mississippi and attended college in North Carolina where she completed a BA at Salem College in 1990, a BS in nursing at UNC Charlotte in 1994, and a MSN with a midwifery concentration at East Carolina University in 2001. She returned to Mississippi and completed a DNP at The University of Southern Mississippi in 2020 where she was inducted into the Graduate School Hall of Fame. She is a member of several professional organizations including American College of Nurse-Midwives, Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Scaggs previously worked at Duke University, Vanderbilt University, East Carolina University, and in the greater Atlanta area. She has presented at the local, state, and national levels on evidence-based care in women’s primary health care, nonpharmacologic support for labor and birth, physiologic labor, labor dystocia, reduction of unnecessary cesarean birth and obstetric emergencies.

Collaborative, evidence-based practice with the patient at the center of their care is my focus. I approach healthcare for all persons as a compassionate partner who not only listens, but who hears.
