Biography: Dr. Shane M. McKinney joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatric emergency medicine in the School of Medicine. Just prior to joining UMMC he was the assistant medical director of the Pediatric Emergency Department and assistant professor of pediatric emergency medicine at USA Health Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. At USA Health he served on several committees, and was the chair of the Emergency Services Quality Committee, vice chair of the Peer Review Committee, among others. Before joining USA Health, he was an attending physician in pediatric emergency medicine at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Dr. McKinney holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and minor in mathematics from Louisiana State University. Additionally, he received a Master of Science in Management of Technology from Georgia Tech University in Atlanta, where he finished at the top of his class. He earned his medical degree in 2012 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine.

He completed his pediatric residency at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, in Little Rock.

Prior to earning his medical degree, he worked a number of years in a variety of professional leadership positions, including systems engineer, division manager, data team manager, managing consultant, director of consulting services and managed care/reimbursement specialist.
As a researcher, Dr. McKinney has numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and national/international oral presentations to his credit. He is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Emergency Medicine and other professional associations.

My Approach to Healthcare

My approach to healthcare is multifaceted. First, my goal is to incorporate the latest evidenced based practices into the treatment of patients, thus giving them the best possible outcomes. Second, actively listening to my patients and families ensures that I address the most pressing concerns they may have at the given time. Third, it is important to have shared decision making and clear communication with patients to achieve the goal of improving the patient's overall health.
