Lam, John T., M.D.
Specialties: Hematopathology (Blood Diseases), Leukemias, Lymphomas and Myelomas, General Pathology
Gender: Male
Biography: My interests focus on diagnoses of hematopoietic diseases, including leukemias and lymphomas, and involve analysis of bone marrow, lymphoid tissue, blood, and other body fluids. This work includes microscopic examination and correlation of flow cytometry, immunohistochemical stains, cytogenetic tests, molecular tests, and HPLC results. I team with clinical physicians to ensure that our patients receive optimal therapies based on accurate diagnoses. My responsibilities cover all aspects of diagnostic testing from sample orders and receipt, to analysis and instrument accuracy, to interpretation and reporting of results. As the medical director of the UMMC Clinical Laboratories Hematology, Point-of-Care, and Flow Cytometry (interim) Sections, I oversee instrument and test selection, cost analyses, contracts, instrument maintenance, and personnel. I work closely with technologists, physicians, and administrators to ensure that our laboratory activities are effective, efficient, and comply with all regulatory demands. Training of fellows, residents, and students are incorporated in all these above activities and include formal lectures as well. Advancement of our understanding of disease is also central to my work and includes formal reports on our many unique clinical challenges. My personal research interests focus on biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of hematologic diseases. These findings form the basis for the next generation of targeted disease-specific treatments.
