Biography: Phyllis Bishop is a Mississippi native who graduated from Mississippi College and went on to receive an M.D. degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She completed a three-year Pediatric residency at UMMC and then subspecialty training at Vanderbilt University in Pediatric Gastroenterology. She began her academic career at Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1994, where she practiced Pediatric Gastroenterology and conducted research on the anti-inflammatory effects of human breast milk. In 1998, Dr. Bishop joined the University of Mississippi Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor. In 2000, she was promoted from Associate Professor in Pediatrics to Professor in 2005. Since March 2015, she has served as the Chief Quality Officer/Patient Safety Officer for UMMC. Dr. Bishop is board certified in Pediatric Gastroenterology and is a member of the American Gastroenterological Society, North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has greater than 40 publications, including original research, case reports, and invited reviews.
