Biography
My long term career goal is to become an independent scientist in the area of cardiovascular and kidney research in an academic environment that involves both research and teaching. My academic training and research experiences have provided me with an excellent background in multiple biological disciplines including molecular biology, pharmacology, and physiology. One of my M.S. research projects used the yeast two-hybrid system to identify the protein interactions of a novel gene. This project helped me to learn numerous molecular and cell biology experimental skills. As a Ph.D. student with Dr. Philip Mayeux, my research focused on the mechanisms of renal microcirculatory failure during sepsis-induced acute kidney injury. From this project, I gained expertise in animal surgical procedures and measuring kidney function. For my postdoctoral training, I joined Dr. John Hall’s laboratory, Dr. Hall, is an internationally recognized leader in cardiovascular physiology and he has an extensive record for training postdoctoral fellows. He introduced me to a new research area aimed at revealing how the CNS leptin signaling pathway differentially regulates blood pressure and metabolism. I gained additional expertise in small animal surgical procedures and broadened my knowledge related to physiology of the CNS and cardiorenal systems. In 2014, I received an AHA postdoctoral fellowship for my second project which examined the synergistic effects of hypertension and diabetes to promote kidney injury. In 2017, I received K99 grant from NIDDK for the project-synergistic interactions of hypertension and diabetes in promoting kidney injury.
