Biography

Dr. Walters obtained his PhD in Integrative Biology from Lehigh University in 2010. His research focused on neuroendocrinology, traumatic brain injury, and regeneration. His didactic training included neurobiology, development, ecology, evolution, endocrinology, behavior, molecular biology, and genetics. During that time he taught several courses including genetics, comparative biology, and cell/molecular biology. From 2010 – 2016, Dr. Walters was a postdoctoral fellow at the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the Department of Developmental Neurobiology. During this time, Dr. Walters was awarded two research grants and published more than a half-dozen peer-reviewed scientific journal articles on development and regeneration in the auditory system. He also taught genetic engineering as a visiting assistant professor at Rhodes College. In 2016, Dr. Walters moved to UMMC and initiated an independent research program as an Assistant Professor in the departments of Neurobiology and Otolaryngology. Since that time, Dr. Walters has published several peer-reviewed articles and has been awarded funding from the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Defense, and private foundations. He also teaches in several courses (medical neuroscience and behavior, histology, foundations in neuroscience) and is course director for the NSCI710 biostatistics course. He currently serves as the president of the UMMC faculty senate.
