Biography

Nils Mungan, M.D., Professor, is a board-certified Ophthalmologist specializing in Pediatric Ophthalmology. Dr. Mungan was born in Calgary, Canada and attended medical school at the University of Ottawa followed by residency in Ophthalmology at the Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans. After completing his fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto, Dr. Mungan began his practice at UMMC in 1999. During his career at UMMC, Dr. Mungan has been recognized with many awards including the AAPOS Honor Award from the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus. Dr. Mungan has written a textbook chapter on esotropia (crossed eyes), has authored or co-authored numerous medical journal articles, and serves as an investigator on multiple nationally sponsored research studies. Dr. Mungan is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus. He has also served on multiple national and international committees for pediatric ophthalmology and has been the organizer of several international symposia. Over his tenure at UMMC, Dr. Mungan has helped train in excess of 70 new ophthalmologists. Dr. Mungan has four children and enjoys half-marathon racing, skiing, canyoneering, camping, reading, electronics and was very active in Boy Scouts. Dr. Mungan speaks English and French fluently.
