Biography

Dr. Freeman is a behavioral pharmacologist specializing in the study of substance abuse. He completed a Ph.D. in Psychology (Behavioral Neuroscience Track) from American University in 2007 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Pharmacology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in 2010. Dr. Freeman joined the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at UMMC in 2010 at the Instructor level and was promoted to Assistant and Associate Professor in 2012 and 2017, respectively. Dr. Freeman's NIH-funded research focuses on the development of novel abuse-deterrent formulations for prescription opioids. Dr. Freeman also studies the behavioral pharmacology of polydrug abuse (e.g., combinations of stimulants and opioids). In addition to conducting research, Dr. Freeman directs the Office of Medical Student and Resident Research for the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. He teaches across all levels of the institution including graduates students, medical students, and residents. Lastly, Dr. Freeman speaks regularly at schools and other community meetings to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse, the related costs to society, and the ways in which these problems are being addressed by the research enterprise at UMMC.
