Biography
Dr. Fazlay Faruque is a professor of Preventive Medicine and the founding director of GIS & Remote Sensing program at UMMC. In addition to his expertise in environmental health, he brings geospatial techniques to the health scientists to conduct spatial analysis for epidemiological and health care-related studies. He has been engaged in teaching and research in the areas of geospatial technology and environmental health for more than thirty years.
Dr. Faruque received his Secondary High School education at Rajshahi Government Laboratory High School. After completing Higher Secondary Certificate education from Rajshahi College, one of the most prestigious colleges in Bangladesh, he went to Rajshahi University where he completed his BSc and MSc in Geology and Mining. Later, he received his MS and PhD in Geological Engineering at University of Mississippi. Dr. Faruque started his professional career with an engineering consulting firm where he worked as a GIS Analyst, GIS Technical Manager and GIS Manager. He joined the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2000 as Director of the new GIS and Remote Sensing Program within the Office of Research, and also with an academic appointment as tenure track Assistant Professor.
Dr. Faruque is an active researcher successful in securing almost $4 million research grants. His current research interest is in the area of environmental health, particularly with geospatial applications. He has been serving as editor of book volume and special issue journals.
