Biography

Dr. Shermer is a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician with over two decades of clinical experience and distinguished military service. He earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry/Pre-Med from Mississippi State University and completed medical school at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, graduating despite being diagnosed with cancer during his second year—making him a 30+ year cancer survivor.

Following his Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in 2001, Dr. Shermer practiced for 14 years with a private group at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center while maintaining teaching responsibilities at UMMC. He developed specialized expertise in cardiology and orthopedics, including advanced joint and fracture reduction techniques.

In 2008, Dr. Shermer was recruited by the U.S. Army and served with distinction in the Mississippi Army National Guard, deploying worldwide during the War on Terror. He continues his military service while practicing academic emergency medicine.

Returning to UMMC as an attending physician in 2014, Dr. Shermer has assumed multiple leadership roles. He serves as Medical Director of the Observation Unit, expanding it from 2 to 5 beds and developing 20+ diagnostic protocols. Since 2020, he has directed the TelEmergency program, overseeing 20 sites statewide with active research initiatives. He also serves as Medical Director for Critical Care Transport at MCES, furthering his commitment to comprehensive emergency care throughout Mississippi.
