Biography

Dr. Michael Roach received his BS and MS Degrees from the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Mississippi State University, and then promptly acquired a Materials Engineer position in the Biomaterials Division of the Restorative Dentistry Department that later became the Biomedical Materials Science (BMS) Department at UMMC. After the BMS graduate program was formed, he became the first PhD graduate of the program. Dr. Roach currently serves in the role of full professor within the BMS department. He leads research on the material characterization, corrosion response, and failure analyses of metallic biomaterials, implants, and coatings. Dr. Roach has been recognized for his excellence in research with the UMMC Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medallions. He has published 48 journal articles, 2 book chapters, and amassed 100+ conference presentations and invited lectures.  Dr. Roach is also very active in standards development and currently serves international leadership roles in this capacity as the Convenor (or Chair) of the ISO Implants for Surgery Committee (TC 150) working group on metallic materials (SC1 WG4) and the Vice-chair of ASTM International Medical or Surgical Materials and Devices Subcommittee on Metallic Materials (F04.12). He received the ASTM International Leroy Wyman award in May 2018 for his outstanding contributions to implant material standardization.  Additionally, he serves as an active member in the Society for Biomaterials (SFB) and the Academy of Dental Materials (ADM).
