Biography

Dr. Mittwede was born in South Carolina, but spent much of his childhood in Ankara, Turkey. He returned to the United States to attend Belhaven University. He then completed the MD/PhD program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, with a PhD under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Hester in the Department of Physiology. His research collaborations led him to an interest in orthopaedic surgery. He then left Mississippi to complete an orthopaedic surgery residency program at UPMC in Pittsburgh, followed by a fellowship in orthopaedic trauma at Shock Trauma in Baltimore. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Mittwede is interested in education, community service, and orthopaedic trauma research, and hopes to foster continued growth within the department in these areas. Outside of medicine, Dr. Mittwede enjoys spending time with his family (wife and three children) and friends, as well as watching and playing a variety of sports.
