Biography
Dr. Jim Miller pursued nursing as his second career in nursing with the aim of profoundly impacting the health and well-being of his patients and their families. Over the past 19 years, he has held multiple positions at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, progressing from a Registered Nurse to a Nurse Practitioner, and most recently, to the Director of Nursing for the Children’s of Mississippi Medical/Surgical units. Concurrently, he transitioned into academia, initially teaching part-time and subsequently taking on a full-time role as an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of Doctoral Programs at the School of Nursing.
In his clinical capacity, Dr. Miller has served as a Nurse Practitioner within the Department of Family Medicine and, more recently, within the Department of Medicine, specializing in the care of patients with HIV and AIDS. Dr. Miller earned his Doctorate in Health Administration, focusing his doctoral research on diminishing stigma and discrimination against individuals living with HIV. His scholarly interests focus on reducing health disparities in underserved communities and exploring the factors that contribute to student success in higher education.
Dr. Miller believes the primary purpose of higher education is to prepare individuals for meaningful careers, foster personal and professional growth, and contribute to the advancement of society. He understands that faculty play a crucial role as mentors and guides, supporting student learning through a student-centered approach that emphasizes critical thinking, real-world skills, and personal development.
