Biography
Mary Currier, MD, MPH, graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. She completed PGY 1 at UMMC as well, in pediatrics. She earned an MPH and completed the preventive medicine residency at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is board-certified in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine.
Dr. Currier spent most of her career with the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH). She worked in the MSDH clinics taking care of pregnant women, infants and family planning patients from 1984-86 as well as working in the MSDH Office of Communicable Disease from 1988-93 and being appointed the State Epidemiologist from 1993-2004 and again from 2007-10. On Jan. 13, 2010, she was appointed State Health Officer for Mississippi, a position she held until Oct. 31, 2018.
Dr. Currier has extensive experience with governmental health policy, fiscal policy and administrative medicine. She has background and skills in infectious disease outbreak investigation and response, as well as disease surveillance. She has a special interest in vaccine programs and assurance of a healthy environment in which children can thrive. Dr. Currier joined the UMMC Department of Preventive Medicine in 2019.
