Biography

Dr. Melissa Klamm graduated with a BSE in Kinesiology/Athletic Training in 2003 from the University of Arkansas. She worked as an athletic trainer at the high school and collegiate level for 5 years. Then, she changed careers and completed the accelerated BSN program at UMMC in 2012, which is when she was first inducted as a member of Sigma. She worked as a bedside nurse at UMMC in the neonatal intensive care for 3 years and in the pediatric intensive care unit for 2.5 years. She completed a master's in nursing education at UMMC in 2017. After completing this degree, she came to work at the School of Nursing, first in the clinical simulation and skills lab and then in the accelerated BSN program. She was inducted into the Phi Kapp Phi Honors Society in 2020. She served on the Theta Beta Leadership Succession Committee from 2019-2023. She completed her PhD in Nursing at UMMC in 2023, and her dissertation focused on motivation for physical activity among adolescents. She has 12 published manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals with topics ranging from nursing education to physical activity and health promotion. She has presented posters and podium presentations at the state, regional, and national levels on similar topics over 10 times. She worked in an interprofessional team to develop an innovative method for calculating daily patterns of physical activity called movement dispersion. She currently works as an assistant professor of research with an interest in exploring further applications of movement dispersion among various populations to determine ideas for future interventions and potential changes in the way we promote physical activity. Over the past year, she was selected as a member of the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research (MCCTR) Mentoring Academy and the Mississippi Nurses Foundation Leadership Institute.
