Biography

Sara Johnston, M.D., Section Director of Transfusion Medicine and Coagulation, and Medical Director of the Jackson Medical Mall and Grant's Ferry Clinic Laboratories, is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine. She is from Joplin, Missouri, where she graduated from Missouri Southern State University’s Honors Program with her undergraduate Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and Biochemistry, with a minor in German. She received her medical degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, and completed an Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency there as well. Following residency, she completed a Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine fellowship at University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine in Dallas. Dr. Johnston works to ensure the proper use of scarce blood product resources by teaching patient blood management and blood product threshold guidelines to residents and fellows. Outside of the hospital, she enjoys visiting amusement parks, museums, and aquariums with her husband, and spending time with their two miniature dachshunds.
