Biography
Dr. Helms earned his MD degree at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio, and completed residency training in dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Board-certified in dermatology in 1978 and recertified in 2006 and 2016, While in private practice in Warren, Ohio, for over 30 years he taught medical students and dermatology residents part-time at the Northeast Ohio Medical University and Case Western Reserve University College of Medicine. He now serves as a Professor of Dermatology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where his special interests are in Contact Dermatitis/Occupational Dermatology and Patient Safety/Prevention of Errors in Medicine. A fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, he is also an active member of multiple professional organizations. He has performed more than 330 invited lectures at professional meetings across the U.S. Dr. Helms has authored or coauthored 42 journal articles and coauthored 23 chapters in medical textbooks. He has edited one textbook. In addition, he serves as a journal reviewer for multiple journals and has participated in a number of clinical research studies.
